2008 - 2009 School Year

  • January 2009 - Mr. Shields’ physics class (30 students) sends a weather balloon to space to collect data, pictures, and video. The project is dubbed the Super Space Adventure (SSA)
  • February 2009 - 5 CHS students place 4th in the Virginia Science Bowl at the Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA
  • May 2009 - Students from Mr. Shields’ physics class send another balloon into space (SSA2)

2009 - 2010 School Year

  • November 2009 - The CHS Science Club is officially founded, with approximately 10 students
  • February 2010 - CHS competes in the regional and state Science Olympiad tournaments
  • March 2010 - four CHS students from Mr. Shields’ physics class are selected as one of four teams to fly experiments in the NASA BHALF competition. All-expense paid trip to the NASA Glenn Research Center
  • April 2010 - 30 CHS students travel to Europe for a week to see the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Also spend two days in Paris and two days in Charlottesville’s sister city, Besançon

2010 - 2011 School Year

  • September 2010 - Science Club grows to about 30 students
  • October 2010 - Science Club officially becomes BACON, the Best All-around Club of Nerds
  • October 2010 - BACON takes 50 students on a bus to Orlando to see the penultimate Space Shuttle launch, STS-133
  • December 2010 - Finished 8th in the country in the Zero Robotics semi-final round, earning a spot in the ISS Finals
  • December 2010 - BACON presents their recent successes before Charlottesville City Council
  • February 2011 - BACON competes in the Virginia Science Bowl at the Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA
  • March 2011 - BACON places 8th out of 20 teams at the Virginia Science Olympiad state tournament
  • March 2011 - BACON is invited to visit the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) branch office near Charlottesville
  • April 2011 - For the second time, 30 BACON students travel to Europe for a week to see the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Also spend two days in Paris and two days in Charlottesville’s sister city, Besançon
  • April 2011 - four BACON students are selected as one of four teams to fly experiments in the NASA BHALF competition.
  • May 2011 - BACON is named the NASA BHALF top team
  • May 2011 - BACON hosts its 1st Annual Memorial Day Extravaganza
  • June 2011 - SSA3 - BACON successfully launches a payload into nearspace and recovers it along with thousands of pictures and two hours of HD video

2011 - 2012 School Year

  • September 2011 - BACON membership grows to approximately 50 students
  • October 2011 - BACON and CHS host 25 students from Besançon, France
  • January 2012 - BACON is featured in Albemarle Family Magazine
  • February 2012 - Green BACON is named among the finalists in the nation-wide Spirit of Innovation Awards (Clean Energy Divisinon); flown to Palo Alto, CA to present hybrid solar lighting project; featured on MTV Geek website
  • February 2012 - BACON competes in the Virginia Science Olympiad regional tournament at Langley High School in McLean, VA
  • February 2012 - BACON competes in the Virginia Science Bowl at the Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA
  • February 2012 - Visit to GE Intelligent Platforms for Engineering Week
  • April 2012 - For the third consecutive year, 30 BACON students travel to Europe for a week to see the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Also spend two days in Paris and two days in Charlottesville’s sister city, Besançon
  • April 2012 - BACON competes in the Virginia Science Olympiad state tournament and places 9th out of 21 teams. BACON brings home medals in 5 events.
  • April 2012 - BACON named Virginia Science Olympiad “Team of the Year”
  • May 2012 - BACON hosts its 2nd Annual Memorial Day Extravaganza

2012 - 2013 School Year

  • September 2012 - BACON membership grows to approximately 80 students
  • December 2012 - BACON students discuss their club live on WINA
  • February 2013 - BACON competes in the Virginia Science Bowl at the Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA
  • February 2013 - BACON hosts a Virginia Science Olympiad regional tournament at CHS
  • February 2013 - BACON wins the Virginia Science Olympiad regional tournament hosted at CHS
  • March 2013 - BACON’s SPAM (Science Project Advising and Mentoring) division goes to the Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair and brings home 8 awards, including first place in Animal Sciences and second place Medicine and Health Sciences
  • March 2013 - BACON is featured in Charlottesville Family Magazine
  • April 2013 - BACON finishes 9th overall out of 20 teams in the Virginia Science Olympiad state tournament at Virginia Tech. BACON wins gold in the Circuit Lab event in the tournament.
  • April 2013- For the fourth consecutive year, 30 BACON students travel to Europe for a week to see the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Also spend two days in Paris and two days in Charlottesville’s sister city, Besançon
  • May 2013 - BACON hosts its 3rd Annual Memorial Day Extravaganza

2013 - 2014 School Year

  • August 2013 - BACON membership tops 100 students
  • July 2013 - CHS breaks ground on the new STEM Lab (also known as the BACONspace and the Sigma Lab)
  • September 2013 - BACON establishes Team 7080 to compete in the First Tech Challenge, a nationwide robot-building compeition
  • October 2013 - CHS and BACON host 25 students from Besançon, France
  • December 2013 - BACON’s Zero Robotics team beats out hundreds of teams from around the world to finish 2nd in the US and 5th in the world. They earn a spot in the ISS Finals, where they travel to MIT to watch their code fly aboard the International Space Station
